Today, about 23 percent of Germany's annual primary energy consumption is met by gas, and this share is increasing. As in many countries, gas is the most important primary energy in Germany after oil. Natural gas has continually held a top place in residential space heating and hot water supply for many years.
The climate protection debate and rising energy prices have led to growing interest in alternative energies and helped make renewables more popular in recent years. E.ON Ruhrgas will also be involved in the market for renewables in future by producing bio natural gas.
